When 'What If' Becomes Too Loud:
Gently Untangling the Knots of Overthinking

Ever feel like your brain has its own 24/7 news channel, and the top story is always a disaster that might happen? You know that feeling, right? Where a little thought pops in – maybe about that email you sent, or that conversation you had – and suddenly, it’s ballooned into a full-blown movie scene in your head, complete with dramatic music and worst-case scenarios?

Here’s the thing: this overthinking, this constant replaying and projecting, isn’t a sign that you’re broken or weird. It’s actually a pretty human thing. Our minds are wired to look out for danger, to try and predict what might go wrong so we can be prepared. It’s like a well-intentioned but sometimes overly enthusiastic bodyguard.

The problem is, sometimes this bodyguard gets a little too eager. It sees shadows and shouts “Danger!” even when there’s just a gentle breeze. And when those “what ifs” get too loud, they can steal our peace, make us feel anxious, and keep us stuck in our heads instead of enjoying the present moment, right here, right now.

So, what can we do when our mental news channel is stuck on repeat disaster stories?

Here are a couple of tiny, everyday things that have helped me, and maybe they can offer a little sliver of calm for you too:

  • Just Name It: When you notice the “what ifs” starting to bubble up, try simply naming them. Say to yourself (or even whisper it), “Ah, there’s that worry about the presentation again.” Just acknowledging it, without judgment or getting drawn into the story, can sometimes take a little bit of its power away. It’s like saying hello to that over-enthusiastic bodyguard and letting it know you see it.
  • Come Back to Your Breath: Our breath is like a little anchor we always carry with us. When the “what ifs” start swirling, try bringing your attention gently to your breath. Notice the feeling of the air coming in, and the feeling of it going out. You don’t have to change it, just observe it. It’s a simple way to ground yourself in the present, even for a few breaths, and give your busy mind a little pause. Imagine you’re stepping out of that noisy marketplace for a moment and finding a quiet corner.
This whole thing, this learning to untangle the knots of overthinking, it’s a gentle journey. There will be days when the “what ifs” are louder than others. Be kind to yourself on those days.
And if you want to dive a little deeper into this, maybe with a friendly voice guiding you, you might like our first podcast episode, “Fear and Overthinking.” Let’s explore this together, gently, one breath at a time.
