Use the 'Useful vs. Unuseful' Test for High-Value Productivity
As a successful professional, your energy is your most valuable asset. It determines your focus, your creativity, and your ability to lead. Yet, how often do we feel drained by the end of the day?
The truth is, many of us are unknowingly pouring our energy into habits and tasks that simply aren’t serving our highest goals. We often battle ourselves, labeling things as “good” or “bad.” This conflict is exhausting.
There is a gentler, more effective way. It’s time to stop the internal fight and start managing your energy with clarity.
The Gentle Shift: The ‘Useful vs. Unuseful’ Test
Instead of judging, let’s simply test. This gentle test, inspired by our “Living Consciously” podcast, reframes your entire approach to change.
Ask yourself: “Is this habit or action truly useful for me right now?”
The answer is based on your current life circumstances.
- It’s not about morality.
- It’s about energy management and results.
- It’s a calm assessment of alignment.
Reclaiming Your Currency: Investing in Deeper Joy
How do we gently shift away from this automatic chase? How do we find a life that feels rich and meaningful?
1. Test Your Comfort Habits
Many of us use small habits to cope with stress or boredom. Think about checking email constantly, mindlessly scrolling, or grazing snacks while working.
- The Check: Does this action replenish my focus? Or is it a quick dopamine hit that leaves me scattered and depleted?
- The Result: If it leads to a state of depletion or a further attention deficit, it is unuseful.
- The Action: Gently set a boundary around it. Move your phone out of reach during deep work blocks.
2. Test Your Productivity Habits
Even seemingly “good habits” can become unuseful if your circumstances change.
- Example: You have always done extreme cardio. But now you are launching a major project. Your body is under significant stress.
- The Check: Is this extreme workout useful right now, or is it pushing my system into burnout? Does it enhance my overall well-being or leave me too tired to focus?
- The Result: It might be unuseful right now. Intense exercise is useful later. Now, a gentle walk or mindful stretching is the useful choice for sustainable energy.
3. Test Your Social Obligations
This test is powerful for protecting your time. Many professionals commit to events or meetings out of obligation, not desire.
- The Check: Does attending this event bring me joy, connections, or necessary growth? Does it align with my core values?
- The Result: If it fills your time but drains your energy, it is unuseful.
- The Action: Kindly say no. Protect that time as a high-value investment in rest or focused work.
- Stop Fighting: You stop wasting energy on guilt and internal struggle.
- Start Aligning: You replace energy-draining actions with choices that genuinely build your sustainable wellness.
- Find Your Flow: You create an inner landscape where effective, focused work is the path of least resistance.
